In response to a call from the Ukrainian filmmaking organization Takflix, we are presenting a benefit evening with a screening of Dziga Vertov's 1929 film The Man with the Movie Camera with live musical accompaniment. All ticket proceeds will be sent to help Ukraine. This famous film was also shot on the streets of Kiev and Kharkiv, Ukrainian cities where their inhabitants are now fighting bitter battles with the Russian occupiers. Live musical accompaniment will be provided by the experimental collective Krekso with special guests.
Performers: Petr Vrba, Vojtěch Procházka, Tomáš Procházka, Ondřej Ježek, Elia Moretti
The Man with a Movie Camera (1929) is a fundamental and groundbreaking work of world cinema, which brought about new rules of film language. Vertov here thematises both the process of film creation and production, and its perception - the subject of the film becomes the film itself. New media theorist Lev Manovich considers The Man with the Movie Camera to be the most significant example of a media work pointing to "database imagination", i.e. the organization of material typical of new media.
Admission is voluntary and all proceeds will be sent to the Ukrainian Embassy for immediate relief for the country's defense.
