"Why search for what has never been lost?"
Looking for the Cow is a fundamental text of Chan/Zen Buddhism by author Kuo-an Sh'Yuan, which uses ten images of searching for a cow to show the path leading to awakening, the path to satori.
A production about how to search for what has not been lost in theater and arrive at a place where there is no cow, no self, and no Buddha.
A confusing and subversive tea party, where expected images change direction and the calligrapher's brush is washed in tar or cow's milk. No rush, rather stagnation and lingering. The plot of Kuo-an Sh'Yuan's book is often cryptic, opening up questions about a person in a situation, a person at a crossroads; it can be perceived as a metaphor, although it is not a metaphor for the journey of life. It is the journey itself. It has ten images, ten poetic scenes with commentary and songs; it has a plot and it doesn't. Zero esotericism.
